2011 NSW School Bodyboarding Titles + 2011 RAW National Titles + 2011 Rebel Sport ProSurf Beach, Kiama, NSW. October 17th -23rd 2011.
Kiama is about to be inundated with almost 300 bodyboarders hitting the region for one of the biggest events of its kind.
The Raw National Bodyboarding Titles is the pinnacle of Amateur competition and the conclusion of a series of grueling regional and state eliminations around the country. It features riders from all over Australia as well as a team representing New Zealand and organizers are hoping that the infamous wedge fires up for the week long festival.
Event organizer and IBA Australasian General Manager Terry McKenna is excited to be staging the carnival on the South Coast after several years in Queensland. “This is one of the best venues I have ever seen for a contest of this magnitude” said McKenna.
“Effectively we have three separate tournaments running over the week” he added.
“Not only is the area blessed with great waves, but there are so many accommodation options and leisure activities surrounding the contest site, it make it easy for families to attend.”
This year the contest will feature the NSW School Bodyboarding titles and the ASSA (Australian School Surfing Assoc) are working closely with IBA Australasia to deliver a slick one-day contest as a pre-cursor to the Nationals.
Then from Tuesday the nation's best will be trying to secure a spot in the weekends finals in the RAW Nationals along with the contenders in the Rebel Sport Pro.
A good showing at the National Amateur Titles is usually a prerequisite for a spot on the Pro Tour and this year the contestants have an added incentive by being able to represent their country at the ISA World Bodyboarding games in Canary Islands in December.
Team Australia will be selected directly from the results of the RAW Nationals.
• Top 2 Open Men
• Junior Champion
• Women Champion
• DK Champion
A fundraising movie night will happen during the week to gather support for the team.
The race for the 2011 Rebel Sport Pro Tour Championship has never been tighter with five of the world's best riders all vying for the title in this last event on the eight leg series.
Current ratings leader Michael Novy (Central Coast) will have his work cut out with Mitch Rawlins (Qld) Jones Russell (Port Macquarie) Dallas Singer (Newcastle) and Andrew Lester (Cronulla) all separated by just a handful of points.
Novy finished a close second last year to Dave Winchester (Byron Bay) and is keen to go one step further to secure his first Australian Pro Tour championship.
“I’m trying not to think about it too much,” he said. “This last event will be critical towards the outcome.”
Local rider Lilly Pollard is one of the hot favorites to win the Women’s Division and will be hard to stop with a home court advantage.
Likewise Jason McCarthy will be looking to use his local knowledge in the DK division against the likes of Dane Pope, Jon Capili and Glen Sullivan.
The event will also be offering lots of family orientated activities including a bodyboard clinic for kids, sand-modeling contests and loads of product giveaways.
Action gets underway Monday 17th and winds up Sunday 23rd with a gala presentation at The Pavilion.
