Ended up scoring good waves this morning. Went to the lookout and almost canned it when I saw the crowd at Bird Rock. Counted 17 heads.
There were about 5 out Sparrows (top shelf) so paddled out there and got a couple. Got one really fun wave but that was about it. Wasn't many coming through so paddled over to the rock and the crowd had dropped to about 10 people.
Was a nice 2-3ft on the sets and predominantly the crowd was a bunch of groms who were surfing the inside bit.
Myself, 2 other lids, and a stand-up traded the sets for probably a solid hour. Super clean, real fun, wasn't barreling as much as I'd liked but still nice and hollow.

Considering it was summer, and for how crowded it was, pretty rare to get that many set waves out there at this time of year.

I try and do a once a week run and go in both directions - surf coast or mornington because its about the same distance from home - i head to mornington if i think the surf coast is going to be small or the winds aren't right and I go to surf coast if i think the beachies are closing out at mornington or if there is W in the wind. Don't know much about flinders or phillip island breaks & westernport is fine when working but needs to be pretty big swell it seems.

My wifes rels have shown me a couple of 'non' beachie breaks down morno but I haven't got them wired - whenever I check them they are not working - gather you probably have this sussed.

Yeah no stress let me know we see what the swell is doing

savage - one word - jealous - I haven't surfed bird rock all that much - partly because when its on it often has a sizey crew but a couple of waves are burned in my brain - also had some real fun sessions at sparrows.

Going to check forecast later in the week but sat could be on for a morno beachie chops - swellnet says 4 foot & no wind in the morning - but maybe too good to be true??

Had a crack at 13 yesterday as well. I was at the second car park from the wind mill, only a few members of the grey army. Enevitivly the tide dropped, the wind boosted and it was curtains at about 1130. Nice to get wet all over with a few peaky 2 footers. Checked out Bancoora earlier and looked good, but it's a bit like when you score a top chick, you always think you can do better, and when you try you run out of time and end up settling for the average one that isn't great but you know she will put out and have a few good rides.

Definitely a fair call. After I checked it I actually got in my car to drive off and I'm like, ahh I'll give it a burl.

It's pretty much always packed, just depends on who's out there in terms of getting waves though. I've scored it to myself a few times. My favourite time to hit it is on winter mornings when it's freezing (most idiots don't go out because it's too cold), offshore and 1-2ft. You still get good sets rolling through but that size is perfect because a fair bit of the time the stand-up's don't bother because they reckon its too small. The rock actually breaks better smaller and for a lid it's perfect to get in the barrel. Can't wait for winter. I hate summer so much.

Anyone else stoked everyone's starting to go back to school/tourists will slowly start to go home?

Gunna is not a bad bet sunday - hoping forecast hangs in there - i sometimes check st andrews beachie as well although i think it is nw offshore there & seems to be high tide wave - your 1.2m high tide around 9am so maybe worth a look if banks are ordinary at gunna or if crowds are insane. Could be a liddy gunna invasion - i'm prob heading to gunna for the early on sunday too - aim to be in the water by around 630 or 7 & i sometimes head toward cape schank end & get on a left beachie - although the rights in front of the carpark are usually the better wave - particularly the right near the rocks - look for bearded 40 plus dude on blue nmd board - or avoid if you prefer :)

BTW - Has anyone scored portsea lately - i've stopped doing surf checks there - haven't seen much in the way of banks there for awhile???

Bummer! It was pretty good even on fullish tide - some decent enough sets & clean as early - plus with all due respect to the left down the beach I love the rights when their working & not maxed out by the crew. In the carpark afterwards you could hear the stoke factor - guys just out of the water all talking their sessions up at a hundred miles an hour & people on the way in jogging with their boards. I took some pics but forgot to put the @!# simcard in the camera - but my story is less sad than being stood up & then getting wedged by vistors!

Went down south on Friday with a mate. Went as far as Peterborough but the spot we checked wasn't really doing it.
Ended up at Castles which was really clean and pretty solid, but unfortunately the banks weren't that great. Got a few fun ones but most of them were closing out. Forgot how much getting stuck in the impact zone sucks at those open beaches down there.

Gonna try get a wave in at dawn in the morning. Hopefully this swell picks up. Judging from the wind outside, the outcome is likely... Touch wood
