2012 Shark Island Challenge

Postby savage flame » Sat Jul 21, 2012 7:17 pm

It's that time again for undoubtedly the best event of the year to take place. SIC 2012
Tuesday is looking the goods and so I am pretty sure I will be 'ill' that day so I can watch the webcast.

Solid mid period swell peaking Monday/Tuesday with a good chance of light winds for competition on Tuesday.

Low pressure is sitting in the Tasman directing mid sized, mid period swell (topping out at a forecast 7-8ft@11 seconds) towards Sydney building on Sunday and peaking through Monday and Tuesday. Monday most likely sees winds from the south approaching moderate strength at times particularly in the morning, potentially dropping in the afternoon with Tuesday looking most likely to offer light winds.

With the swell direction just south of East, and a 6ft+ swell conditions look positive for competition on Tuesday at this stage with both swell size and period larger than forecast for the 2011 event.

Looking forward to this.

PS - Where the hell is everyone these days? No one posts in these forums at all anymore.

Hopefully it lights up. It can be so fickle though.

Things are a bit quiet aren't they...

Bring on the carnage Yew

Yar its a shame its so quiet in here now. I suppose everyone is just getting there info and commenting in all the facebook pages rather than here. The forums still better for all that stuff as its more permanent and searchable etc but i think the facebook things taken over. Of course it doesnt help that riptide itself seems to have abandoned the forum. Me and Mike tried for several months to get a response from the office regarding mod replacements and the likes but got repeatedly ignored.

i watched the whole thing. and while i do feel privileged to have spent the day watching some of the most ripping riders in world do their thing i think...man, it was kinda shit this year.

comp was run in fairly average waves. surely there could've been a better time to run it earlier in the contest window. half the internationals dropped out. webcast was pretty gross. no discredit to the commentary efforts, they were entertaining enough, but the camera guys were constantly missing waves and showing half replays...not to mention the lack of a water camera this year. compared to last years comp, the whole thing (from an internet viewing perspective) kinda sucked.

my suggestion would be to make this event one of the flagship events. it really is gnarly when its done right, like last year (despite some problems with their webcast early on). put a bit more coin into it, ensure it's run in the best conditions, get a water angle and video guys who are capable of throwing up replays of entire waves and hazaaa she's all apples. i feel bad for Alex Leon cos he seems to work hard at this contest shit but this year the island comp was a bit of a flop (from an online viewing perspective...which is where the majority of people watch it).

i feel bad complaining cos it was entertaining enough, but i'm a simple bastard. hopefully my rant will inspire a few peeps to hit up the forum again (even if it is to burn me)

Big ups to Rawlins. So sick!

Shame it was onshore, I must admit I watched the first 2 heats and lost interest (not usually like me), the webcast quality was also pretty poor. Glad it wasn't lagging or glitching which was good. In no way am I complaining, just a little disappointed. Did it get cleaner towards the final or was it still pretty messy? I had a feeling the wind would be S/SE today up there.

yeh all the forecasts i had sourced also supported this. not sure how that could be overlooked. were they right at the end of the window or something?

Wednesday 1st August

Early peak in large SE groundswell around 6-8ft at open beaches and 8ft+ at south facing locations with larger waves at swell magnets. Swell easing during the day. Moderate to fresh W/SW tending S'ly winds.

Maybe Leo should have waited another week..
