Crazy design! That would look sick on the back of a calf I recon.
I've got a section on my forearm that is similar.

Sweet forearm gig you have going there Boogs, defo like the rounded feel to the edges - and colour is spot-on.

Meaks_85 - luvin the font of the script for starters - easy to read at a glance. Words solid - always wanted to be buried at sea when the day comes myself. The Red indians have an old saying which kinda relates to the theme of your words - "Don't stand beside my grave and cry - because I am not there".

Collimi - yer, same as Boogs, soon as i saw that graphic, I immediately thought of a calf tatt.

yeah boogs, your forearm look sick!!! After looking/reading all these posts i think it's definitely time for a new one, well get my sleeve started.

Did you designs most of yours yourself boogs? Or did you just go in with what you had in your head and they drew it up for you??

I've got a couple that I've drawn myself, but usually I'll go in with an idea and sit down with Matt from Purple Hayze and sort it out from there. But all my tatt's are custom, nothing off the wall.

yeah, off the wall stuff is just so meaningless. I know, i might go get a southern cross tattoo...noone's done that before!!! haha!!

Yer custom is def the go. did a lot of consult with the artist with each of mine - detail, colours, shading. (Good) Tatt artists know a good few things that can help a design look good on the area and skin tone it is being inked into. there is actually a lot in the technical side if you want a quality piece that is as close as possible to the design you have on a 2d (two dimensional) white piece of paper. Even variation in the tone and thickness of the base outline All sorts of stuff.

I remember on one of the many times I was waiting to have a chat to Tony about the development of one of the designs, a bloke came in off a Navy boat. Big american sailor - just wanted work from whoever in one of the rented out chairs. He was a character - Big mofo cigar. He had a quick look through the wall designs and a flick through one book, pointed at one that fitted in the lessening clean space on his leg and said "that one'. only an outline and an hour later it was done. It fitted the theme of all his other random classic Navy-type tatts, but not my sorta gig personally.

On the other hand we were out at a restaurant on a hot summer evening and one of the waitresses came over to ask me about my ink - absolute doll she was, french chick travelling. she had been looking for an "old-school" tatt for about a year (even though se looked about 19yo) cos she said that was what she really wanted to go with her others. She had just found a pair of swallow birds the other week (when i was growing up a lot of harder blokes used to get those on their necks) and was getting it done the next day, funnily enough i reckon they would have suited her heaps, cos even though a classic, she had put a lot of thought into what she wanted... so ya never know I spose.

Just had a rustle around and found one of my fave books on tattoos from a Western perpsective:
simply titled "The Tattoo" by Sydney artist and ink legend Tony Cohen. Fascinating read with heaps of pics (of course). dunno if it is still available, or if it is general bookstores. A soft cover unit from Tony's Studio "Illustrated Man" published by "Outback Print" Sydney.

i don't think theres such a thing as too much detail in a tattoo.

There is, ive been designing tats for a long time, and i have lots of designd that ive showed to a fair few tattooist and the response is always the same, "Too much detail to do with a needle."

Shading is one thing, but detailed line work by a pen cant always be met by the gun.

^^ totally agree Tors. A lot of folks also don't take into account that the ink lines do spread over time (amount depends on various factors, but they all spread). Also if you are getting colour designs, a lot of detail in the outline (normally done in black ink) will strongly tone and sometimes dominate small areas of colour.
