We could always go visit a few and tell them your idea and they will draw something up. You can then say what you like and what you don't like and go from there. I know a few artist so we can go for a drive one day if you are keen. I need to book in for mine anyways!
what Meaks 85 said Meaksy. Faces are an individual skill in the tattoo world. There is a bloke who inks in SA called Mik Massingham, he has a good rep for portraits. His place is in Semaphor. If you read up on his bios, he is a pretty 'arty' dude as well, his whole approach may gel with you quite well. you could check:
http://www.tattooartists.org/MikMassinghamhttp://www.srtstudios.com/index.php?option=com_igallery&view=gallery&Itemid=8Mik does his portraits in realism and like '85 said, the more pics of the subjects you want portrayed the better.
Tatt placement is a whole choice in itself, with blokes and portraits you want to be aware of where your body hair grows - dunno how keen you are on a bearded missus or kids with hairy faces

depending on how many gorilla genes are in you, that could make half the decision for you. Then there is stuff like if it is ink you want to be able to see yourself? How big a 'flat' surface area do you want for display - or is around an arm ok?
Stuff like that. half the fun is in the planning.
