Starting a clothing label

Postby kasperflipped » Mon Mar 28, 2011 3:02 pm

ahoy there chaps and chapettes
Ive been tossing around the idea of starting a clothing line. Now im not talking about another slap a logo or photo on a tshirt and ive started a label type of clothing label. My first article will be specific item used mainly in snowboarding/skiing, with your usual supporting tshirts and stuff to follow afterwards. But in the meantime im wondering if anyone on here has or knows anyone whos started up a brand and if they have any tips for how to go about it, what to watch out for, good suppliers for making the items and aslo for woven labels etc, how to approach shops to stock your stuff, that kind of thing. Im still very much in the planning stages with only my hand made prototypes but things are moving along quickly and any advice i can have to make this thing a success id appreciate so i dont become another dude at a sunday market selling 300 printed white tshirts.
thanks in advance

Check ascolour.com.au they have super quality shirts and they have a relabeling service. I have some samples of their shirts and I am gonna be using them in the future on my site.

P.s as for approaching shops. I have had a few brands approach me, just be casual but professional. Dont push it to much straight up. And most shops will expect you to advertise them on your own website aswell.

Gildan have quality shirts, only problem i've encountered with them is that they shrink a bit especially all cotton jumpers but good base colours.

and they can tag them up for you no extra cost if you buy a certain amount - http://gildan.com/index.cfm
then you have to get them printed, i know red hot printing does quality jobs - http://www.redhotdesign.com.au/

I was thinking of starting a brand but im putting on hold as the whole of the surf industry is saturated and retail is shit at the moment no one is buying anything at the monemt. billagong and the other large brands annual turn over halfed last year or something incredible.

Sorry for being a bit negative and i hope your company goes well though bro its great to see

Hahaha good old lazlo.

Kasper - if your pretty into the idea, I reckon go for it mate, like most things would be pretty tough to get into. But the rewards would pay off pretty amazingly.
