i know shit all about cameras but unless your gonna buy a waterproof olympus digital camera which i doubt, your SLR budget for a camera and housing is gonna be like over 2 grand or more, still wanna be a cameraman?

if you just want to muck around and take some pretty good shots at the same time get a olympus water proof point and shoot..not sure what model it is..
i dont think a dslr is necessary for you until you no its something you enjoy and want to keep going with.

I would be going with a panasonic TZ15, 28mm wide angle lens, big zoom zoom and Leica lenses, the video quality is alot better on that cam also than most other compacts. I got my mum one for her bday and it is AWESOME quality for a compact, housings go for about $499 but that was from Caringbah Camera House...don't go there they will rip you off like crazy but deff get it from somewhere else.
hope this helps you abit

this is my story, I purchased a Nikon D100 for $650 second hand from ted's, then Purchased a tamaron 17-50 f/2.8 $450, a Nikkor 18-200 f/3.5-5.6 $450, and a Nikkor 50mm f/1.8 $200

as you can see I've spent well over a grand and have alot more to spend, I'm currently saving for the 70-300 f/3.5-5.6 thats $700

this is pretty much an average guide

say a half decent telephoto say 70-200 f/2.8 thats $2300ishhhhh
one of those massive lenses you see people using thats usually a 400mm f/2.8 ++ and thats $10,000+
a fisheye that's almost a grand there

if you want a SLR body that is good for beginners, there is a deal on at teds for a D60, 18-55 f/3.5-5.6 and 55-200 f/3.5-5.6 for $775
Nikon D300
10.5 f/2.8
50mm f/1.8
300mm f/4
