pulling muscles

Postby joshm » Sun Apr 17, 2011 2:50 pm

after about 3 hours in the surf yesterday i went to get a wave and managed to pull a muscle in my calf. Which sucked cause i wanted to stay out longer. Leg is killing me today hurts to walk on lol.

Anyone ever get this? And how do you prevent it? I did do strechs before i surfed

I have never pulled a muscle that i can recall, but whilst in south coast nsw i compressed both my calf muscles on a tire swing thing. meant for 5 year olds so no leg room, put my feet down to stop and they both went under and squished against the ground and tire. thought i broken my shin, got off and tried to stand and collapsed onto the grass, coouldnt walk for 6 hours then slowly got better. funniest shit out haha

I always get cramps in my calf muscles, can't recall ever pulling one. Try stretching before surfs/in the water? The second part may sound retarded but it can happen im sure

Warm up before you surf, Boog is tough on calves, especially with the rapid kicking is you aren't on a steep reef take-off. Mine are always super tight near the knee insertion, comes with the territory.
If you want to make a mate tap "uncle", get him down and shove your thumb hard into the upper calf just above where the gastrocnemius (google it) splits (the midline). Few can take it. Pretty funny to watch 'em tap out, haha

yeh im mass cramping ATM pretty annoying i like to run under water.. like pump your legs to get them loose then stretch them by bringing your legs to the nose of your board whilst under water so.. like keep your thigh on the back and swing your leg towards the nose in the water,
i get really sore ankles which really prevent me kicking a great deal, i usually only cramp when im doing reverses in crit sections where you can get thrown a bit by the whitewash..also inverts cause your leg can get a bit stuck

P.S My marine studies teacher rekons its from a lack of salt..
so eat alot of salt on foods according to him
everything happens for a reason.. we just dont realise it at the time

Tips

To stop leg/foot cramping, firmly press in on the upper lip. This is the meridian which is connected to the legs and feet.

Cramping often comes while you are exercising. follow these tips:

Keep hydrated. As you sweat, you lose important electrolytes, which are needed to prevent cramps.

Warm up for 10-15 minutes before exercising. This will stretch out the muscles you will be using.

Take magnesium, potassium and calcium supplements daily, especially before exercising.

Folk remedies

Apple cider vinegar Drink a mixture of two teaspoons of vinegar and one teaspoon of honey in a glass of warm water. Apple cider vinegar is high in potassium.

Aspirin helps stop the production of prostaglandins, part of the process that causes cramps.

Calcium: A calcium deficiency causes muscle cramps or involuntary movement of muscles. However, we do not recommend taking Tums on a regular basis due to its interference with your normal digestive process. We suggest that if you get frequent leg cramps you take a calcium supplement daily. Taking magnesium with the calcium will aid in the absorption of the calcium and prevent calcification of various organs and soft tissues.

CoQ10 may aid in relieving muscle cramps.

Magnesium will help the smooth muscles that surround your arteries to relax, and your body uses it to process calcium.

Mustard: For years coaches have given mustard to their athletes with leg cramps. Cramps are sometimes caused by a deficiency in acetylcholine, the neurotransmitter that stimulates your muscles to work. Mustard has acetic acid, which helps the body make more acetylcholine. Take a spoonful or two of mustard.

Pickle juice As with mustard coaches have given pickle juice to their athletes with leg cramps. Cramps are sometimes caused by a deficiency in acetylcholine, the neurotransmitter that stimulates your muscles to work. Pickle juice has acetic acid, which helps the body make more acetylcholine. Take a few ounces of pickle juice.

Homeopathic
Leg Cramps with Quinine by Hyland's. Take as directed. This remedy contains: Cinchona Off. 3X HPUS, Viscum Alb. 3x HPUS, Gnaphalium 3X HPUS, Rhus Tox. 6X HPUS, Aconitum Nap. 6X HPUS, Ledum Pa. 6X HPUS, Magnesia Phos. 6X HPUS.

Cheers Chuck, the home remedies are interesting...

I've always suffered from leg (particularly calf and foot) cramps. Nothing worse than being halfway through a move and having both calves lock up so you can't straighten your legs...that is until your still stuck like that when the next wave in the set lands on your head!

Dudes are weird. I've never stretched, not once, and the only time I've ever cramped up was when my wetsuit flushed with water in Iceland resulting in basically an all over body cramp. Never pulled a muscle. My advice would be to get better muscles.

This just further reinforces my suspicion that you're not actually human.

I've only cramped up once. Which was in my calf. I think i have stretched once before a surf, that was when I pulled my calf playing footy the day before
