yeh as kc said its an ultra wide rectilinear (=straight lines) lens, with reknowned sharpness, good quality build, and a fast 2.8 aperture which isnt that useful if you just take landscape shots during the day, but becomes indisensible at night when you want to limit the length of the exposure. Oh and its $600

robbo is the 11-16 the same as the 10-22 in the aspect where it streches the sides(when landscape), thats one thing that turned me off it.

your going to have to explain that more kc. but if you're talking about barrel distortion, allll ultra wide angles suffer from it, but it is only obvious at really really close distances. To summarise what ive read about all the ultra wides: the tokina is the sharpest by quite a bit, it has the best build quality, its definitely the fastest (in terms of aperture and not autofocus; which isnt really important with UWA lenses cos even at f/2.8 if your subject is at 10ft, if you focus at 5ft, everything from 3ft to infinity is in acceptable focus); its relatively cheap (certainly cheaper than the 10-22). However it does have worse chromatic abberation which shows up as purple or green fringing in areas of high contrast (like an object against a blue sky) though this is easily corrected in lightroom or any program. It does have rather bad flare control but doesnt seem to be that big a problem to me.

If you wanted the SHARPEST lens the 10-22 would be a better option, as some people even call it a hidden L lens ,but yes it is overly priced for a piece of glass. And for $500 you can get a sigma 10-20, which is reasonably similar in terms of image quality. with also a bigger range of zoom, id go the Sigma over the Tokina any day

haha are you quoting me on that hidden L? Anyway neither are bad lenses, though i think you need to check out some of the comparison reviews because the reviews and examples suggest that the tokina 11-16 is the sharpest out of ALL the wide angle lenses in that price bracket (excluding like the canon 16-35 which is only an UWA on a full frame). The reason i suggested the tokina is that a) its sharper at the centre and much sharper at the corners; b) its a 2.8 which is always nice but some people wont need it and c) the canon 10-22 is an efs lens so wont work on a full frame camera, where as the tokina 11-16 will work on a full frame at around 15-16 mm without vignetting, and this is something to think about for me at least because im considering getting a 5d classic before i go off travelling as a spare body and a full frame cam. The 10-22 is a great lens, and sure you can get more zoom length from other brands than the tokina, but its an UWA man its stuck at 11mm for most of the shots you'd be taking.

haha it was just in my head, must have read it a while ago and not realised when i posted it. the sharpness is only so minimal in zoom lens' that its hardly noticeable, i just personally have a hate for all tokina gear

I've never used one, so have no input into this, but am curious to know why?

what tokina was it? and if it was a wide how often are you having to readjust focus? im not a spokesperson for tokina but from my experience the 10-17 has produced some really nice photos, it feels alright and it gets the job done for cheaper than most. That being said I probably wouldn't touch their longer lenses unless i knew what i was doing
