Riptide no#187

Postby SINNistER » Thu Apr 05, 2012 9:19 am

I meant to post this early last week (my subscription turned up super early yay!) and also thought someone else would post it but since no one has My thoughts on this issue are:

The new riptide format that has been around for the last few issues is still really appealing to me, the mag has a much more sophisticated look and overall the regular sections within this format are providing articles that are more interesting to an older reader like me.

There is a nice piece on Sam Bennet, I enjoyed reading it as I haven’t read much about him to be honest. To me the dude comes across as having a level head on his shoulders and a more unique perspective on things then a lot of other guys his age. This was a cool article and makes me want to pay more attention to this guy.

Tully Beevor!! The article on this guy was cool as dudes my age will remember him as a big time player back in the 90’s. The guy ripped and then just disappeared. It was interesting to find out what happened to him (sort of confirmed what I had heard/thought happened). The portrait pic of him does make him look a bit seedy imo though ha ha. These sort of articles that delve into the history of our sport are what has been missing. This coupled with the bit on Gath Helmets and the one on churchies in the previous issue are captivating articles and provide a nice stroll down memory lane for the older readers or a recounting of how things used to be for younger ones.

The Hawaii section was ok, the tales from the pro’s was good but perhaps of utilizing lots of little pictures (a lot of lifestyle and portrait ones too) the gallery of empty waves earlier in the mag could have been used to show more shots of guy’s ripping.

The Port Mac bit was really good and well written, definitely one of the better articles I have read for a long time and the accompanying shots were good too.

The shooting gallery (is that what it is still called in the new format?) at the front had some great pics, especially liked the one of Winchester and the one of Novy.

I haven’t read the article Called chasing gold or whatever it was, will read it tonight but I skimmed over it as just a lot of what looked to be cold water barrel shots isn’t as interesting to me as guys boosting or doing moves etc.

Comes with a free dvd too of Ewan Donachie’s 6 Months, have only watched the first few chapters but looks great and really looking forward to seeing the rest of it tonight (to get pscyched for the Sunny coast swell to hit this easter yeeeww! Lol).

Overall a good issue of Rippies and what appears to be a great dvd.

Sounds good, I've been meaning to drop down to the shop to grab it - I'll have to today.

The format/style change has been great. More mature and with increased content, which I think is pretty important given the competition and the fact that it's a bi-monthly publication now. Definite step in the right direction and seems to reflect some of the suggestions put forward here over the last couple of years.

6 months is one of the best bodyboarding releases I've seen in a very long time.
Everything about it was done so well.

Enjoyed the mag - don't want to get to greedy and read it all at once - so still looking it over. Couldn't stop watching 'six months' video though. I really enjoyed the narrative as much as the bodyboarding footage. The more personal insights into the demands and risks these guys face getting the video and pics we all love to see was fascinating. Format with the thoughtful voice over made for great story telling and put the bodyboarding and all the travel in a wider context - e.g. the importance of the group dynamic & resilience when things go pear shaped - really really interesting and insightful stuff. Love this vid. :)

Could somebody please tell me. What happened to Tully? I was a big fan in the 90s, such a great style but he disappeared. Can't buy the issue, so could someone just let me know where he went?
