Yeh thats what im talking about, pretty rank really, compared with what Dreamland used to be like.
However, i would not turn down the chance to own one of those apartments, so its a double edged sword that you cant have both ways.
Thats the one problem with development, you either save the environment or you develop. You cant have both

Yer so found some info on illegal fishing, have been thinking abou t it since the vessel went aground at Padang – no dis to anyone, just banging up some good info courtesy:

New Scientist Magazine.

The biodiversity of the oceans is as threatened as ever, despite efforts to conserve it. According to 2 new reports. Plans to set up protected areas are proceeding woefully slowly, illegal fishing is thriving, and international pledges to improve matters are achieving little.

Both reports focus on the high seas beyond the 360 km limit of national exclusive economic zones. (EEZ’s). the high seas are especially problematic because they are not governed by any single nation, which means the rules are often complicated and difficult to police.

One way of protecting marine life is by establishing marine protected areas (MPA’s) in which fishing is restricted. Marine diversity needs global protection “and building a global network of MPS’a is fundamental to thatâ€

they were going to made a big cruise terminal and shit... and i think get rid of the sandpipe and that would have wrecked strad and probably the spit...

lols there is like no rubbish at south strad....the people who care will usually scoop it up in the surf in chuck it in their wettie pocket...there is abit of stuff in the seaway....my friend got a fishing hook through his toe one day but thats about as bad as it is

hey heres a bit of a comparison

60's hahaha

Early 90's i think...would have been shit though too much south in the swell

Hey Ralphy - I was reading about:
Surfing At Cables Artificial Reef

With a million dollar budget and a decade of project development, the Cables Station Artificial Reef now produces some of the world's most expensive waves. There is something mildly satisfying about surfing a wave which cost more than the average family home.

I may have been living under a rock (or granite slab in this case).. what is the story with it? Sound like yet another attempt by engineers to try and understand and mimmick (unsuccessfully) the ocean?

Cables is the best wave in the metro area by a mile. I have seen it break so perfectly, almost Indo like with 3/4 second right hand tubes.
The problem is that it breaks a hand full of times a year if ya lucky.

Cables reef is situated about 500m south of Cottesloe. There was originally a reefy outcrop there that they just built the surf reef on top of. The problem with building the reef there is that Cables probably gets the least amount of swell as anywhere on the metro coastline. Cables is situated pretty much directly behind Rotto, so pretty much all the swell is blocked by Rotto.

The only problem with the reef was the positioning of it. It makes sick waves but only a few times a year.

If they had positioned it a couple of K's to the north or even down south past Rockingham the local surfers would probably be praising them.

The reason it was built where it was, is because there was already a base reef structure there and that by adding some more reef on top it was not going to affect the local ecosystem/sand movement etc too much.

If they had built it anywhere else along the metro coastline they would have had to put the reef straight down onto a sandy bottom. The affects that this might have on the movement of sand up the coastline could have been drastic so thats why they didn't put it anywhere else.

They could have and should put it down on a sandy beach in my opinion as it would probably have less of an affect than the groynes that have been built all along the metro coastline.

I personally think they should look at putting another one in down the southern Rockingham/Mandurah end. We get more swell than up in Perth and we have some massive, empty, straight beaches that i believe would be perfect for a trial. Yes, the reef may affect the build up of sand to the north of the reef but it will have no more affect than what all the development down this way is having. With our currents & sand movement i think with the right shaped reef they could make a really high class shorter right/longer left hand peak.
If it does not work as expected just remove it, they are only sandbags.

i think they should chuck a reef of south stradd hahaha :)

they tried one at narrowneck it has to be pumping and clean as for it to work well....its gold coast quality just like the quality of people at surfers at 2 in the morning.

means it freaking shithouse and a waste of taxpayers money
