Mentawais

Postby cashews » Sun Sep 07, 2008 2:05 pm

So I've pretty much booked atrip to the Mentawais next May, spending around 11-12 days on a charter boat :D Has anyone spent time in the Mentawais either on a charter or land based accommodation? If so what should I expect; any useful advice or stories worth telling? The floor is open....

Mentawai's isn't the same after the earthquake, but i'm sure you'll find something good over there :)

as good as maccas and lances right are - there are soo many other breaks of similar quality. Which boat are you going on - depending on the captain you have most of the skippers know just as good places with no one around (watch tension 3 for example), which is much better than surfing maccas with 30 other blokes (most people want to go there just to tell their mates they have surfed maccas).

the playground section is good with lots of waves (but boats too) - my tip is to head south. I'll put some pics up tonite.

do you always have to act like an expert on everything?

if it wasnt the same....then why would have movement done a feature on it?

if you get the right swell lad it will be insane

That's what i've been lead to believe aswell SR. Apparently it completely ruined some of the spots (i.e. going dry on high tide), but opened up a whole new area of reefs that were once too deep.

Going on the nagalaut mate. was going with a few mates but everyone bailed so i hopped on a boat with a few blokes from Cronulla apprently. I'm going in May so are the crowds as bad as in june/july BK? It will be my first (and hopefully not last) trip so I happy to go whereever the skipper thinks is the right call 8)

sorry dude can't really tell you about crowds as I haven't been there since 06 and there's been a bit of unrest lately with land camps popping up and restrictions/licenses being applied to the number of boats being allowed to operate. May though is a good time for light winds as July onwards is generally known for periods where the southerly can blow, and the southerly is about the only wind that can really limit your wave choice. The last time I went was in May and whilst I didn't get any swell, we consistently had 2-4 foot clean surf, it was still a trip to remember and am actually looking at loking at booking another trip for next season.

yeah May is always hit and miss swell wise.......the last two years have seen some decent swells hit the Mentawais in May so i'll take my chances. Looking forward to it nonetheless. As you said mate, theres always small to medium swells around the area.
