NIGHT TIME SURFING??

Postby JONNO313 » Sat Feb 16, 2008 11:10 am

Hey guys and girls. I have a mate or two that reckon they go out Night time surfing but only on full moons otherwise its to dark to see the waves. I personally think that would be scary as all buggery. Isnt that win sharks feed??

Anyone gone out at night for a boog?? apart from teh guys on tensions 10 who had massive floodlights.

And if you have did you brush up against any sharks.

No brush up with sharks, but I have been out till about 7 pm, and yeah the moon was the only thing lighting it up for us. There was about 5 of us out there.

We were full on desperado's though, I wouldn't do it again. It's to hard to see and all.

Stayed out DY point till about 9:30. About 1-1.5 hours after sun was past the horizon. Lit by the pool light and full moon. Didnt get to many waves and only decided to go in because i got a decent sized one which i decided i couldnt be f##ked paddling back out from. Was still people out there after i was changed and driving away.

On another forum heard of antics of mounting a torch onto a helmet and surfing night time shark island, voodoo etc

I've surfed until after dark on the Goldy before, because theres a fair bit of light from all the high rises and street lights and all. Gets really hard to see, but when there's all the various colours of man-made lights shining through the barrel lip it's a pretty insane view. It's also trippy not being able to see what's going on down the line (good for the reflexes!)

Shame you can't see the rogue sets until they break on your head though. I only lasted maybe half an hour of full darkness before I got sick of having about 2 seconds between seeing a wave and having to go it or scramble out of the way.

heres the story, also mentioned other breaks other times but im to lazy

a few weeks ago when we had that good swell i got a call from 2nd reef to say the island was pumping, so i pulled out the old helmet and purchaced two torches... one for my board and one for the helmet.
as well as some vasolene, 8 D size batteries, some duct tape and some bannannas (i was hungry).
vasoed the insides of the torches to stop any corrosion and lube the seals.
got the torch duct taped to the helmet and the next day set off for home and shark island.
i ended up getting some barrells that my youngest brother and mum watched live on swellnet.com's island cam while matty kept an eye out on me from the cliff.

anyway fast forward to sat night and i get talking to an old bloke called chris that surfs long and shortboards out newcastle beach and cowrie hole regularly into the night. we regularly stay out way after dark.
he's an old bloke from the days of when ulu's was first surfed.
we got talking later that night while i was looking for some lost surfboard fins on the rocks, and he was fishing. i showed himmmy helmet torch and we had a yarn about torches and fishing etc, and he said he would keep an eye out for my fins i had lost.

monday night comes along and a young bloke by the name of marty is dieing to try out my helmet torch, so we go for a night surf on boogies, then on single fins out the cowrie hole into the night.

yesterday arvo comes around and i pull up to the cowrie hole after work and its allready dark, theres a dude pulling a surfboard out of his car and he is wearing a helmet and a torch. its me old mate chris.
he calls out, hey you coming out?

we ended up going for a surf, him on his brand new surfboard, and me on my boogie.

i said to him "its not going to be the same anymore you know, people will start doing this" he gave a laugh and agreed.

we came in to shore later on having a yarn about the old days at uluwatu, surfing spoons and me surfing black rock with my brother with a dolphin torch at 4 in the morning.

up rocks marty amped for a night surf, and its his birthday.

he is getting his shortboard waxed up, while chris and i yarn about batteries and other stuff when i look up at the point theres two bodyboarders paddling out with torches.

i have a feeling its not going to be the same anymore.

ha - weird - just came in from a night run and found this. go out in the evening when I can - it's so friggin peaceful. came in a little early tonight ocs the Southerly was blowing the waves out and it went to crap. I live in the city so there are usaully enough lights around to see the wave faces. Even though it was overcast and raining could still pick up a few good runs. the lightning flashes gave some good special FX

Yeah I've been out with just the moon lighting it up, feels pretty cool. Can't really see the sets, you gotta try and sence it a bit more. However it was only like 2-3ft.

Me and a few mates have hit up a 10:30 session at the Superbank on a full moon, a lot of the guys in our office square live for this shit! Tie a glow stick round your neck and ride away. It's pretty scary, but super fun and different nonetheless.

Having the glowsticks around you neck, would this be effective enough with a slow shutter speed? Or is it not enough light in the glowstick and/or the rider to fast?

Cus that would look great in theory!

I guess it could look pretty ace with a low shutter speed, but you'd probably need a big dirty flash of some sort as well. Unfortunately my knowledge of cameras is pathetic. There's a bit of night-time fun (photo-wise) coming in our new issue.
