yeh im thinking of moving down to margs to but what are the job opportunities like i have a trade...will it be hard to find work?

theres not a great deal of work here...well work you'd move to margs for haha

im a painter/decorator by trade so pretty much relying on building going on and that...i can do other jobs but i suppose...painting would be twice as better money tho believe it or not

Cheers for the tips fellas, If I cant find any work in my field (which is likely) I will look at other options. I am keen to do most things.

I was thinking of working in a hotel or retail shop but I don't know what the pay would be like. Mines sounds like a good idea, but do you need to have some sort of skill or trade to get into them?

Whats the rent like for a place close to the beach (probably looking at Perth)

As for cars, whats the going rate for your average motor vehicle?

Is localism bad in W.A? over here I dont have to worry, I surf by myself about 80% of the time.

i cant tell you what work in a hotel or retail shop would be like but can confidently tell you what work on a mine site or a drilling (offshore) rig would be like. Mine sites and rigs are pretty hard to get a job but if you have a decent head on your shoulders, or even better a trade, you might be able to get a look in and go from there. Mines and rigs offer at least a 2 week on 1 week off rotation or even better (maybe 3 weeks on 3 off). you can go from washing clothes or working the wet mess on a mine with a good rotation and earning 70,000-80,000 grand to getting a bit of time under your belt and moving up the chain (being a roughneck, or drive a truck) and be on well over a 100 grand. Its all about whether you want it and whether you can stand being away from home/mates/loved ones for a few weeks, but ultimately having a few weeks off. I'v done this rotation for about 5 years now and sure i miss out on heaps of shit (xmas, easter. mates b'days and even good swells etc) but i have a shitload of time off when no one else does and am still lucky enough to have a bit of money in the bank. Its all about how as a person you want to handle it. hpe this helps

Kiwi, firstly there are plenty of sheep over this way, just remember to bring that velcro glove, helps ya hold onto those buggers

As for getting work as an animator/illustrator, you are going to have to find work in Perth. Even then its a pretty specialised field with not too much work going, but im guessing you would already know this as you work in the industry.

The surf around the Perth metro area is OK. Summer you will not get a wave, but during the rest of the months you will be able to get fun to frustrating waves all along the metro coast.
Your best options for decent, less crowded waves is to live in the outer suburbs such as Mandurah/Rockingham in the south (where i live) or go north and live in Joondalup/Yanchep. There is fairly consistent surf to be had around both areas out of the city and it is really only half an hour to an hour car/train trip into the city. You also have Rottnest Island about 15min ferry ride from Freo. Good surf there pretty much all year if you can learn the conditions under which all the breaks break under. Expensive to get there though with a ticket being between $30-$50.

Yalls/Margs (3 hours) to the south and Lannos(1 hour)/Gero(4 hours)/Kalbarri(5 hours) to the north all have sick surf and are only a couple of hours drive either side of Perth. Can go to either for day trips or weekenders if your keen on the drive.

i can tell you one thing, stay away from kalbarri, sure jakes is there but everyone including myself you that i know who has tryed to get a sesh in there on a lid has either been yelled at so much they headed in or been punched in the face, apart from kalbarri the midwest is really good for waves and the croweds are always small and friendly

localism is pretty much non existent in the perth area.. theres no waves good enough to be worth a fight for .. beaches like scarborough and trigg get mega packed even on average days ... water temp isnt bad all year round ..
its only about 2and a half hours down to yallingup from perth where uve got world class waves for bodyboarders .. if surfers are at a spot that not too many ppl know about down there then they can get a bit territorial with perthies ..
just show them respect and they will respect you

I've had two sessions at Jakes and both times I got along with the local crew fine. However there are indeed millions of break around the midwest and it's definitely worth your while exploring, there are some really nice (and really uncrowded) breaks a little bit north of geraldton.

i went to kalbarri for a week and didnt score jakes at all. the only place that was decent was blueholes and that was only about 2ft and crumbling... so the $400 spent on diesel hauling ass up there and the 16 hours driving time was all for 2 sessions
however one day jakes was NUTS like 12 ft and blowing super on shore and out of the blue these random guys rock up and paddled out. catching some crazy waves from the point into the bay. yewwww!
