Ha ha, that is gold! It would wold work though, you could pimp ya head out with a shmick LED one form Mitre 10.
a few weeks ago when we had that good swell i got a call from 2nd reef to say the island was pumping, so i pulled out the old helmet and purchaced two torches... one for my board and one for the helmet.
as well as some vasolene, 8 D size batteries, some duct tape and some bannannas (i was hungry).
vasoed the insides of the torches to stop any corrosion and lube the seals.
got the torch duct taped to the helmet and the next day set off for home and shark island.
i ended up getting some barrells that my youngest brother and mum watched live on swellnet.com's island cam while matty kept an eye out on me from the cliff.
anyway fast forward to sat night and i get talking to an old bloke called chris that surfs long and shortboards out newcastle beach and cowrie hole regularly into the night. we regularly stay out way after dark.
he's an old bloke from the days of when ulu's was first surfed.
we got talking later that night while i was looking for some lost surfboard fins on the rocks, and he was fishing. i showed himmmy helmet torch and we had a yarn about torches and fishing etc, and he said he would keep an eye out for my fins i had lost.
monday night comes along and a young bloke by the name of marty is dieing to try out my helmet torch, so we go for a night surf on boogies, then on single fins out the cowrie hole into the night.
yesterday arvo comes around and i pull up to the cowrie hole after work and its allready dark, theres a dude pulling a surfboard out of his car and he is wearing a helmet and a torch. its me old mate chris.
he calls out, hey you coming out?
we ended up going for a surf, him on his brand new surfboard, and me on my boogie.
i said to him "its not going to be the same anymore you know, people will start doing this" he gave a laugh and agreed.
we came in to shore later on having a yarn about the old days at uluwatu, surfing spoons and me surfing black rock with my brother with a dolphin torch at 4 in the morning.
up rocks marty amped for a night surf, and its his birthday.
he is getting his shortboard waxed up, while chris and i yarn about batteries and other stuff when i look up at the point theres two bodyboarders paddling out with torches.
i have a feeling its not going to be the same anymore.
