oh are you wanting to do full on water photography? if so id recommend save up for a Nikon d300 or around that. and buy lenses first then save for the housing.

and get a spl waterhousing.

its not cheap to buy into this "hobbie". id recommend that you start using your camera on land before you get a housing. get a idea of all the setting's and function's and when to change all your settings for different conditions before you start using it in water.

Hey Tom - if your keen on Nikon then have a look around for a 2ndhand d200 - you should be able to pick one up for around $600- $700 and their much better value from what i understand. Not sure on the specs but id assume the focus system is of a higher standard then the d40 & d60 along with fps.

**Just had a look at some reviews and found this along with a comparison guide**

"Basically D40 and D60 bodies don't have an autofocus motor in the body so there are some older lenses that won't autofocus on them, the D60 has a higher resolution than the D40 but some say that is at the expense of high ISO performance in low light"

once you start to use and know your camera more you'll start to manual focus. but if he is looking to get into water photography and using a housing id recommend the d300 or the d200.

Always go for the best glass you can - always

I mentioned the D200 before because its in your price range and is a mid level body between a consumer and pro series body. Cheaper bodies will provide limitations which will help improve your photography in more ways than you could imagine and as miichael said - once you got all the settings sorted you can then invest in better gear.

Good luck :)

hint: no one manual focuses.

if all the good guys used manual focus, they would just buy manual focus lenses as they are alot cheaper.

yea i know john i ment it in context to the d40 + d60 not having auto focus in the body and some of the lense's not autoing. and some people still do manual focus.
