Sam Strachan Interview

Postby doclach » Sun Oct 04, 2009 4:23 pm

Doc: Hey Sam,
Good to catch up with you at Emerald the other day, been smacking up the Island much?

SS: Yeah man been out there just this morning was real average though. Couple of good days a while back but nice an east gets rid of all the standups haha.

Doc: Riptide put a pretty sweet vid of your riding on the mainpage the other day which is causing some froth around the place. Dessie spotted you pretty early on, what do you feel has brought your riding level up so fast for your age?

SS: Yeah I was stoked too see they posted it up. Dessie has helped me heaps even though I’m not riding for him anymore he has helped get me more exposed. I think just surfing with an older crew around Cronulla such as Shaun Pyne, Sean Notley, Showell etc has pushed my riding heaps just looking up too those guys an trying too surf the way they surf has pushed my riding heaps.

Doc: What do you feel are riding criteria that can make a grom stand out from the talented crowd at the moment?

SS: There are so many talented young riders around Australia at the moment I think its more if you have the mind set too push yourself to surfing better and better and especially in bigger waves.

Doc: TOYS is a pretty big name International label to be riding for, do you find it intimidating at all riding for a label with such a strong rider history?

SS: At first I thought the guy was having a laugh when he asked me too ride for him. However now its been a year or so I have become good mates with Will the owner even though I still haven’t met him in person haha I’m just stoked to be riding for such a good supportive company and I cant wait too meet up with the crew over in Hawaii at the start of next year.

Doc: what mix of Prone/DK/Stand-up Boogie are you riding?

SS: 95% prone 5% standup bodyboard haha.

Doc: What boards are you running in your current quiver and what are your current faves?

SS: Im currently riding a Dan Sivess toys custom and a Fender stock board from toys. They are both such sick boards but currently I’m just breaking in the custom an getting used to that.

Doc: What dimensions and core compositions are you finding hot for your riding at the moment?

SS: I’m liking riding real narrow, smaller boards but have a bit of thickness to them as well they are real fast and have a lot of control. I only really ride dow around Australia I hate pp and only ride it when the water is exceedingly warm.

Doc: And how about accessories – leash, fins and wetsuits?

SS: Up until three days ago I was wearing gyroll leashes but after snapping my 6th one I converted too creatures leashes haha. Stealths and a zion and a tiki wetty.

Doc: D.O.B height and weight?

SS: 1/7/1994
6 ft and 63kg

Doc: Fave breaks – local and overseas? (no secret ones)

SS: Suck rock local and probably Club Raro in the Cook islands.

Doc: And what’s the toughest wave you’ve hit up already?

SS: Supers was so scary the first time I surfed it, just so intimidating how close it is too the rocks and the scoop is pretty hard.

Doc: Do you have a crew you hang with in the water?

SS: Yeah generally surf with Aaron Ducquet, Brayden Mawson, Ryan Hutt, Luke O’connor, Sam Aylett and Shaun Pyne.

Doc: What’s the maddest roadtrip you’ve been on?

SS: Plastic People Hellfire Tour drove from Syd to Queensland an back some real funny times an some real rough times haha. Savoji spent a night in a cell, Andre brought home a whale to Simons mums bed haha getting chased by trailer park chicks in the mini van haha such fun. Oh and I managed too smash the vans window too…

Doc: Best boat trip?

SS: Yet to go on one.

Doc: Board history – any chance you can remember and name the boards you have had under you over time? Fave ride ever of all of them?

SS: I can’t remember all of them but I remember my first board was from Kmart, it was bright green an said on the bottom THE GREEN MACHINE. The thing was a nightmare and about 46 inches long but the slogan on the bottom made up for it. Since then I have ridden Mantas, 4plays, Hydros, QCDs, Turbos, Sciences and a BZ for a month or so haha. Toys are defiantly the best boards I have ridden though hands down.

Doc: Scariest moment on the boog?

SS: Got caught inside on a bomb at suck lefts that ripped both my fins off an just pinned me on the bottom for so long, just felt so helpless without fins on. it was really scary haha…

Doc: How would describe the boog scene in Australia at the moment and where do you see it heading?

SS: The Bodyboarding scene is sick you can paddle out almost anywhere in Australia an everyone will be chilled if its just bodyboarders out. Sometimes in can get a bit intense when there’s the standup vs bodyboarder rivalry at places but that’s just things you gotta deal with. I think the scene is just gonna keep progressing as a free surfing sport the world tour isn’t the best any more most of the comps are in grovelly 3ft beachies and just don’t showcase Bodyboarding how it deserves to be shown.

Doc: What do you reckon BB needs most at the moment?

SS: Some heavy weight sponsors too put money into the tour so we can get good waves and good prize money into comps that are gonna showcase Bodyboarding perfectly.

Doc: What do you love most about the BB culture?

SS: I love how you can go almost anywhere in the world that there’s waves and people will help you out just because you ride a boog. Bodyboarders love to help out other bodyboarders and keep the sport progressing its sick.

Doc: Who would you like to give a shout-out to?

SS: Thanks Mum for being supportive when I have to miss school to surf.

Doc: And finally who are your sponsors?
Toys Bodyboards

Sammy has started a tumblr blog. It's barnd new, so give it time. He's intending making an entry a week, which is a pretty sensible start in my books, as that helps it be consistent:

there will be some pretty sick shots and stories in there along the way, so well worth keeping an eye on

This video is why Sam Strachan is the best rider for his age from the East Coast.
He shreds so much. Watch him go far.
