wow, maybe the guy on the phone at cathay pacific wasn't joking ($42 per kg was his quote). I talked to my local travel agent though and they said that if it's only a few kilos over it shouldn't be a problem.. At most I'm only gonna be 5 kgs over or so. Bodyboarding gear + jackets + tshirts is all I'm taking in my main bag anyway.

Also it's a bit too late to send stuff to sydney...

Pack everything that is heavy in your carry on bag. Shoes, fins, whatever. Then act like its as light as a feather. 5kg is a fair bit but you could chop if off if you pack smart.

all good in the end, main bag comes up to 23kg so that shouldn't be a problem, and it's just gonna be shirts/jocks 'n' socks/laptop in the carry on, so too easy
