Confital 2010

Postby doclach » Sat Dec 04, 2010 7:08 am

Just in:

Day 1 at Confital

The last event on the 2010 IBA World Tour got underway in small but clean waves at El Confital.

Local rider Genisis Acosta was the days top scorer with a 7.5 average in the inconsistent right handers.

“ I am just happy that I was in position for one of the biggest waves of the day” said Acosta.

“Even when its small this wave is fun”

French riders Mathew Desaphie & Nicloas Padrios also featured in the best scores of the day, following in the footsteps of French riders like Pierre Luis Costes and current world champion Amaury Laverhne.

“Yes there are many French riders in Anglet and also in my home of reunion who are really surfing well” said Amaury.

“ The waves are really good and I think that with a big GSS event in Saint Pierre the local guys will be frothing”

The trails and opening round of the event was completed before the organizers decided to wait for something better tomorrow.

IBA World Tour manager Terry McKenna said that there is a record roll-up for the event in the Canary Islands.

“Yes, the event is completely full and in fact we had to knock back some late entries because we simply don’t have the time to complete all the heats”

“This contest is fast gaining notoriety as one of the best events in the world and like Pipe, riders have now put this on their “Bucket-list” as an essential stop on the tour” said McKenna.

Riders are to meet tomorrow at 8am for an 8.30 start

The event is being web-cast at http://www.confitalibatour.com and daily highlights and images are available at http://www.ibaworldtour.com

sh#t that was a mission Anthony haha, had to google Canaries generally. Current time there is 1.12am sat 4th, time here is 12.13 pm (just writing it down cos i'm a bit dyslexic with numbers - you early got 11 am there), so looks like they're 11 hours behind us.
that would make an 8.30am start 7.30pm here the same day ( i think - just check that - I'm hurrying at work)

(edit: I'm assuming the webcast , cos it is a quality one, will start when the comp does)

Also some El Confital stuff I found in the travels:

Hey ATV, would you have time to give the young blokes a quick rundown on some of the BB event history at El Confital? no point leaving all that knowledge just sitting in those brain cells.

Day 2 Confital

The second day of the Confital Pro saw organizers faced with tiny conditions that forced them to look towards the Galdar region for surf.

La Guancha was the best spot on the island so the competitors and staff packed up the gear and hit the road for the first time in the events history.

Never before in the last 4 years has Confital failed to produce the goods but it worked out to be a blessing in disguise. This place is a classic euro-surf spot complete with cafes by the sea, fisherman drinking beers and a vast array or excellent reefs well suited towards high performance bodyboarding.

Round tow of the Men’s was up first and despite the higher tide making the sections a bit fat the level of riding was impressive with some of the new Canary crew looking solid.

By the time the Women hit the water the tide was rolling out and the reef was draining off and starting to show the potential its known for with some big scores being laid down by the likes of Chiaki Okuyama (Japan) Ann Lacoste (France) and the new kid on the block Alexandra Rinder (Canary Is)

Alexandra is only 13 years old and blew away the crowd with some major combo’s that stamped her as a major star of the future.

The day finished with the drop knee opening rounds and the crew wafted and threw tail at just about anything that moved.

Young Hawaiian Kona Kuialani was impressive finding some rare cover-ups but the story of the day was former world women’s champion Marina Taylor.

She continued her giant-killing run in the DK ranks progressing to the hoots of the local crowd.

Riders are to meet tomorrow at 8am at Confital and chances are very high that the event will once again be relocated to Galdar.

The event is being web-cast at http://www.confitalibatour.com and daily highlights and images are available at http://www.ibaworldtour.com

the 2nd even in 08 had small but still fun barreling waves and a local boy took it out and Uri Valado won the world title
the 3rd event 09 wrapped up in kinda junkie conditions but Hubb got far enough in the event to claim the world title sorry i can't remeber who won but i remeber Hugh Pinerho was in the final
