Concave Convert

Postby doclach » Fri Feb 25, 2011 1:50 pm

Concaves aren't that well known - and having spent a lot of time on 2 board models with a full concave much of this summer (both Kingy's, one 4 play, one turbo, but preferring the deeper concave on his prev 4Play model) i'm loving the way the concave slick eases over the classic summer cross-shore bumps and onshore chop. Reckon I'll be sticking with concaves from here on in. Super fast too. Loving 'em.

Good question, if you were a real kook, you wouldn't ask the question fella
from the designs site:

CONCAVE SLICK
Having a concave slick will create superb speed and wall holding power. The concave forms a tube of water funneling out at the tail section. Excellent for all power riders.

think of one of your channels. Imagine you softly opened the curve of a single channel across the who;e rear of the slick (or between the channels, depending on your preference, i prefer no channels with concave) it's like a very faint crescent going into your slick if you look from nose to tail. the board centre is the deepest part

Griff you old bastard - haha, saw your other post mate

Also the Cartel Toby Player comes with Concave. Wouldnt mind checking that board out, never seen one. One of my first pro boards was a BZ Player. It was such a good board 42.5 and wide, but damn it was a good board.

They've always intrigued me since the first ones I saw with the Manta 'Tunnel' slick.

I had an LMNOP Limited with what I suppose you'd describe as a twin concave (or the world's widest channels!) which seemed to work really well on bigger clean days but I wasn't sold. I think I'll be giving one a crack for my next board...

Totally different Pete. Needs that clear wide arc. good onya for stepping out - be interesting to see what you think.
Be ready to use weight on your elbows a little more than you probably currently do - that's what i find anyway, slightly different mechanics in that way.
first choppy day you will fall in love man.

How does concave differ from standard surlyn slick in terms of composition/materials?

Toby Player PE 43" Single Stringer, Mesh, Channels + Concave $160 at a certain shop.

Eyeing it off hardcore.

This concave thing sounds pretty rad.

I recentley got Cartel Toby Player PE 42.5 with concave. Havent ridden it yet but definately an interesting looking board. As well as the concave which is very subtle on this board in my belief, the board also has a scalloped front deck giving the board what appears to be dead flat rocker on the bottom but the slightest amount of rocker on the deck from the elbows forward. I have the feeling this board will scoop amazingly well in sucky reef breaks. Such a swwet looking board too, awesome finish and construction not to mention price...$160 from a particular shop also. I couldnt see this board warping any more than any other board. Not through the tail area anyway. The scalloped deck may tweak a bit if you rode a few sessions only going one way but I reckon any PE core would anyway. Might ride it this weekend but its sooooo nice and new at the mo' and Im in love with my Turbo Andre Botha currentley.

BZ used to make a board with a concave tunnel bottom, 50/50 slick rails and funky tie die slick. In fact, BZ have tried some weird and wonderful variations, but like some of the tunnel/channel/hull concepts Manta and O+E boards came up with, they have presumably gone the way of the dinosaur. I used to really like the tunnel/concave bottom boards for their speed.

Does any board manufacturer utilise Arcel cores?

I'm pretty sure there's a guy in Hawaii in the past few years who custom makes boards using that core. I'm basing that on absolutely no evidential fact but I recall hearing that somewhere.

BSD boards come in Arcel, either customs from hawaii or stock boards from Jay at ebodyboarding.
