Computer Scam!

Postby Swoodle » Mon Mar 07, 2011 9:08 am

Just a quick heads up for people who aren't to computer tech.

There is a scam where a person will call up saying that they are working for Microsoft or some sort of Internet security firm and that your computer has been infected with some sort of virus. They ask you to go to your PC and navigate you to your eventviewer which generally will show a bunch of red crosses(very normal). They say it's bad and to download their software which will fix/get rid of the virus for a smallish fee, generally $50 or so.

It's a complete scam!!!!! Both my parents and grandparents have been called in the last 2 weeks. They are nailing generally the older generations. When they called my parents house I was home and my grandparents were there. Have to give the guy credit on the other end because he didn't hang up even though I verbally abused him for a good 4min. I questioned the guy on what my external facing IP address was, he replied it was 90.61. I laughed and informed him he was missing a few digits.

Let any relos or older generation know that they should be giving these people some abuse over the phone before they hang up. . . . These people are no more than complete SCUM!

Haha, yeah I got one of these calls... Made some calls and gave the rest of the family the heads up and sure enough, my parents were called not long after.

Scumbags. Clever scam though - easy to see how it would suck the unwary/less knowledgable in.

From what I've heard (might have been a special on JJJ's Hack program?) there are call centres literally set up for this purpose in India. It's just a numbers game and they are making a killing.

Ha. Yeah, I told em where to go the other night. They called my mums house and I took the phone and asked a few questions about the scam, and if they where proud about what they where doing... it was pretty funny.

I would love to post up exactly what I said but somehow I think the mods would frown on it.

So I got the call, decided to lead them on a little.

Insisted that what they were explaining was beyond my computer knowledge, then when i finally got there I complained about smoke coming from my case and a burning gasoline smell followed by about 6-7 minutes of putting them on hold. Amazingly they were still on the other end when I took them off hold and informed them I confused my computer with my toaster and needed to go.

Keep them on the line for as long as you can. The more time they burn failing to scam you the less time they have to scam other people.

I'll get mum to give me the phone if she picks it up, then put them on hold and tell them I'm going to go get her, then come back 5 minutes later, and tell them that she's busy then tell them i'm going to get dad, come back in 5 minutes pretend i'm him, get them to walk me through every step, then tell them its a mac and see if they can help me with an assignment
