For all his charging ability - I've watched him power into pumping barrels at Blackrock, moving like a fish to get the sweetest line - James is respectful and courteous on the water, making sure everyone gets their turn on even the hectic days before taking his own. Mr. Nymeyer carries the flag of the companies he represents quietly and proudly, letting his riding do the talking.
Interview by Doc
Doc: What’s your name? (So we spell it correctly)
JN: James/Jimmy Nymeyer
Doc: Do you have a riding nickname?
JN: yeah most people call me Nemo, maybe its becuase that fish called nemo is always in the water like me or its just short for Nemo-myer.
Doc: Age weight and height?
JN: Im 19 years old, i weigh around....62.543kg and im roughly 181.234 cms tall haha.
Doc: Prone/DK/Versatile?
JN: Prone for sure. But most people haven't seen me on the knee, which might be a good thing.
Doc: What board(s) are you riding?
JN: Ive been riding for Todd (qcd) for over a year now,he shapes some mighty fine boards for me, the best in the business by far.
Doc: Which club is your home?
JN: Solid bodyboard Club, the only real bodyboard club. Dont believe me? Ask Garth , he'll tell you.
(haha - note from Doc - an interview with Garth about solid - the shop and the club - is in here viewtopic.php?f=5&t=3586 )
Doc: How long have you been on the Boog for James?
JN: I'd say around 5 years now.
Doc: How did you start riding?
JN: Through a good friend that taught me everything from putting my fins on, to doing backflips and el rollos , thanks Dan!
Doc: Which riders inspire you most and how/why?
JN: Novy, Mitch, BP, Tom smith and B Backshall are my top 5 .They are amazing bodyboarders , their styles separate them from the rest in my mind. Also Yew-an Donachie , he is an absolute soulman, the way he surfs pipe combined with his personality inspiries me just as much as the worlds best.
Doc: Fave move and why?
JN: Backflips, when done with style, look and feel the best. And are becoming more and more popluar with new generations.
Doc: Fave break and why?
JN: Hard to choose, Maybe raro because it has the most intense punchy airbowl sections or the choice of a heavy barrel on the takeoff , but i coudnt go past a good day at Pipe, with a weekday crowd, its an amazing place like no other. Doc will back me on that
Doc: What can be improved in our sport?
JN: More money, more sponsors, more people, more tour events and more publicity and less Greg Blewett standups, that Christian Bail when the waves about to get good.
Doc: Where do you see Booga heading?
JN: To the top, the amount of upcoming booga's around my place is amazing, you could make an army. Its just a matter of time until more and more people get on a boog and enjoy themselves.
Doc: Biggest wipeout?
JN: Sth pacific, the amount of power generated by a 4ft wave on 6 inches of water is pretty intense and there's a good chance you'll run into my spikey friend , urchy.
Doc: What goes through your mind when you are about to take on a wave bigger than any wave you have tackled before?
JN: If Smythe misses this wave im going to burn his house down.
(note from Doc - for who 'Smythe' is, checkout the frame credits below)
Doc: What do you do to keep fit and train for boog?
JN: Expression sessions , surf for as long as possible even if its 1ft slop , because there is nothing else to do for that day. Eat the right foods before and after surfs. Also blind surfing, dont check it, just go out, sometimes backfires.
Doc: Fave boog photographer and why?
JN: Andrew 'Hairygumnut' Smythe, he works magic behind the lense and is getting more and more shots run lately, he is destined to go far. It's one of the most satisifying feelings to look in after a wave and see his wolverene head bobbing up and down with a huge smile on his face, its like the first time i saw the beetles. Also P. Gallagher, for bringing out that insane book and for that recent angle of Bunts, incredible.
Doc: Who is an up and comer you reckon will go far in the future?
JN: Wade Masters n Tom Winter are 2 of my closest mates, and they both kill it. They push me in every surf and will definitely be hotshots in the near future, i got my money on it.
Doc: Your future aspirations?
JN: To find out what aspiration actually means.
Doc: Your biggest lie?
JN: I didnt use spellcheck once in this whole interview.
Doc:Favourite pastime?
JN: Mario cart
Doc: How do you reckon you will achieve those aspirations?
JN: A dictionary, haha um... future aspirations, im guessing that means goals? umm to keep surfing as much as possible, to make the right decisions to travel to the right spots, to keep my friends and family close. Mostly just enjoy myself as much as i possibly can and meet some cool new people along the way. To get skunked less! and just have a good fricken time always looking on the brightside, its not 1ft onshore redhead, its kinda slopping fun looking redhead haha.
Doc: Who would you like to thank, including sponsors?
JN: My girl bam, she is amazing and has always supported me , smythe ma boi, for believing in me when i tell him the clouds are going to go away. To my sponsors , firstly to Todd Q ( qcd ) a massive thanks for always hooking me up with a ride when im in need. Greg S ( dunes ) a big thankyou for keeping me warm at 5am on the southcoast. Simmo and Garth (solid) and Sam K ( beyond ) for hooking me with some sweet threads and helpful advise. And last but definitely not least, the Doc himself, cheers for the interview and for your insightful conversations out pipe, you are the true encyclopedia of bodyboarding, keep ripping!
