I'd like to try a custom board one day,
at the moment its not really necessary, i'm happy with my ben player and dave winchester both same core
but ones bat tail ones cresent and thats all the difference i need for now.
I'd base a custom off of the winny if i ever got one i think,
but i'd just get it with an extra stringer and 50-50 rail instead of the 60-40, anything to try and get some more speed.

Southern sounds like you have way too much experience :D

So finally after going back the first time because Glen forgot to put contours on it and there was a mix up in sizes (many thanks to Turbo for dealing with this professionally) I have my new custom :D yet to take it out and looks like another few days of onshore here but might get out on it anyway. Still stoked any looks like it will go really well!

i think custom made boards are over rated, it frustrates me seeing kooks or even medeocre riders with a custom qcd etc. i think that they are a cool concept but if your not pro or haven't been riding on heaps of different rigs for years and years don't bother.

1. how the hell do you know exactly the dimensions you want when you may have only tried a few various stock boards. sure you may know the core, stringer combo that would suit you best etc. but its the dimensions that are going to determine how well the craft goes
2. and why is that going to suit you better than a stock board?
3. are the dimensions that you choose actually going to work properly together in a combo?
4. if you really are not 100% sure of exactly what you actually need/want (not just think you need), why bother when there are perfectly weighted and designed stock boards out there made to the right proportions designed purposfully.

but if you can justify all those things... knock yourself out.

i just think that the customs are bit of a wank. but it is cool that you have a personalised board with the colours and setup that you want. i just think you should be getting the basics down on a stock.

don't shoot this down without backing yourself up.

i think your a 100% correct.

but it sounds fun to choose pretty colours

resurrecting an old thread here, found it trying to find some word on QCDs.

while i half agree with this post, you've probably gotta consider that when ordering a custom, you're most likely going to have some kind of correspondence with the shaper. you don't need to be a shaper and know everything about board design to get a custom. if you sent in an order with some obscure dimensions he's likely going to pull you up and say "listen dickhead, this is just not gonna work"...unless of course you're deliberately trying something new and in that case, that's your own risk really.

something i'd consider is, for me personally is that i'm a fairly large, late 20's guy, with a little more cash than a grom and i'm keen to see if a shaper can't come up with something a little more comfortable for me than what i can find in a stock board made in Indo. i'm not a shredder by any means, but i can afford nice things, and if i can correspond with a shaper (who knows heaps more than me) directly and get something that is right for me, for a similar price to a stock, made by hand in Australia (supporting local industry), then i would totally do that....and i wouldn't give a f@k whether someone thought i was a poof because i'm a mediocre surfer on a custom 8)

so, anyone else out there riding QCDs and want to share their thoughts?

The problem with stock boards for me is the availability in the store, because I'm not a big fan of ordering stock boards I have never physical picked up over the Internet.
The best thing about custom boards is you can get exactly what you want- size, template, colours, contours and whatever at pretty much the exact same price as a stock board and know the thing is going to made well and feel amazing in the water.

Also I would much rather support Aussie shapers like Todd, Glen, Gibbo, Tully, than a brand that manufactures all their boards overseas by machines.

i was riding a qcd when i booged and it just felt better, simply put the feel of the board was alot better then my NMD winchester, this isnt the smalls board either but the 380$ one so top of the range, alot more comfterable to ride ( however i have contours on my qcd )
everything happens for a reason.. we just dont realise it at the time

This. Also, similar to this poster, I'm in my 30's and my days of being a teenage stick insect are long behind me. I find most stock boards these days have narrow templetes and thin cores which no doubt work very well for a nubile and flexible 17 year old, but not so much for me. Getting a custom board helps resolve these matters, and given that I'm in full time work, money is not an issue - still wouldn't pay over $400 for a board tho.

i see no problem getting a custom when you are a mediocre rider especially as you can get a custom for the same price.

i personally don't have one as i'm a bargain hunter and find it hard to part with $150 rather than $300+ (turbo IV frc i just got cost $145)

i was in search of a particular board being a bigger guy and there are very few quality boards in 43"+

so if i can get a 43"+ board in custom colours, stringer, nose bulbs, channels.. throw in an extra stringer, even some mesh and a total cost of $350-360 don't see why its a problem.

the day i've ridden 5-10 stock boards and have a bit more cash to spare i'll happily get a custom.

Yeah I've got a custom found.
Really nice finish on the rails and well laminated, plus they look sick.

Its a beaded pp core with three stringers.
