It's time for the Yallingup Surfilm Festival in WA to go down again. This year the venues include the Madfish Winery, Yallingup Hall and Samdura in Dunsborough. One of the movies that's having its Australian Premiere at the festival is Sea of Darkness. It may not be as dark as Conrad's novel, but it may get close.
Here's a brief description:
The truth and discovery of surfing, adventures, mystery, pirate boats and drug smuggling.
“Sea of Darkness” is a modern day pirate tale exploding with adventure, mystery, crime and the discovery of jungle surf spots off the remote Indonesian Coastline from the 1970’s and early 1980’s.
The film follows the life- changing decisions made by early Indo surfers Mike Boyum, Jeff Chitty and Peter McCabe, who turned to drug smuggling to fuel their passion for surfing. The film shows the terrifying price that some of these men paid. Mike Boyum is recognised in the film as the surf explorer who discovered G- Land, renowned as one of the world’s most consistent breaks.
It also shows those decisions made by Martin Daly, Bruce Raymond and Dave Barnett, who funneled their wave addiction toward more legal pastimes, which gained them fame, fortune and a lifetime of perfect waves.
Martin Daly states: “It’s time the truth is told and many of us want to get the story off our chest.”
This film charts the story of a dynamic mix of unique and roguish men. Their stories seem unbelievable at times however the versions of historical events are verified through the narration of their personal recollections and the mysterious truth of a surfing tale that is no longer a secret.
Intriguing...
