One of the last tasks that Riptide photographer, and "Riptide Slave", Alex Ormerod did before leaving the office to commence his Army Reserve training in Wagga Wagga was to prepare a gift package for some of the Australian troops currently fighting in Afghanistan - he wanted to get some bodyboarding mags to his mate Nathan Bewes in particular.
Private Nathan Bewes was killed in a roadside bomb blast just before midnight on Friday. The 23-year-old is the sixth Australian soldier to be killed in just over a month and the 17th Australian soldier killed since the war began, nearly ten years ago.
Earlier last week Nath contacted Alex to pass on his gratitude, and that of his fellow soldiers, for sending the magazines which would help them get through such a long stretch away from the ocean.
Riptide would like to express our sincere sympathy to Nathan's family and friends.

Hold this thought if you knew him well or just a booger that did not but cares about and respects Nathan; picture his heaven (I’m not religious) and the joy he is getting from it. Let it bring a smile to your face whatever that picture may be from the joy Nathan is receiving. For me that would be perfect barrels and Nathan well and truly slotted with a monster smile on his dial.
One of our Tama crew is currently in training to head over there in the not-too-distant future and came down to give me his Rush/Rippie/Bodyboarding collection at the comp on the weekend before he heads on the next step. One of those poignant moments (lotta love from the boyz Hank).
Boogers are everywhere and doing us proud.
I have so much respect for all our troops overseas, especially those that know the enjoyment and exhilleration of the ocean, because being landlocked in a hell hole like war torn Afghanistan must be the closest to hell you could get.
Me & my girlfriend only just watched the Hurt Locker last night and while it may be a bit over dramatised I can no doubt imagine everyday feeling like it's your last when in such warzones as Afganistan and Iraq. I'm very proud of our Australian soldiers and the great work they do to protect the freedoms we enjoy and often take for granted.
Thankyou Private Nathan Bewes and those that have fallen before him for doing such an awesome job!
