"Sam entered the Pipe Trials and the waves were shit. The trials were on the other side of the island from the North Shore, so JJ (Ayala) and I gave Sam a ride. The previous night we'd been out 'til three in the morning, and Sam was in the back seat of the car; not partying, just going along for the ride and he never complained once that he was stuck with two retards like JJ and I. Sam had to be at the beach at 7am for the Trials check-in so we dropped him off with only a couple of hours of sleep under our belts.

"When JJ and I returned to pick him up from the Trials, we arrived to see him walking around with only a towel on - nothing else. It turned out that while he was in the water someone stole all his clothes, money and his new Vans. Plus, he'd lost his heat. What amazed me was that Sam wasn't even that bummed that all this had gone down. Instead he just said, 'I learned a lesson. I need to qualify for Pipe so I don't have to do the trials ever again!' He shook it off and was ready to party with JJ and I.

"For me, Sam showed his true colors that day. I don't know any 15-year-old kids, or even adults for that matter, who would've responded like that. When things go good it's easy, but it's how you respond when things go bad that's more important. Sam your fucking awesome! I love the kid and he already has more groupies then Van Halen circa 1984. When I was in Oz someone told me that Sam and Dylan need to cut their hair. Don't cut your hair you two - it's sick! You two look like leather-wearing bikers that have chicks hanging on the back of their bike with the bikers name tattooed over their breasts!" - Will George.

"The team had a photo shoot scheduled at the Riptide studio with our boy Alex Ormerod (where the accompanying portraits came from). Rewind a couple of days and Leo had arrived on the Gold Coast with one of his footy friends named Guru. Leo and Guru had been going mad in Australia's city of sin, Surfers Paradise for three days straight.

"The day of the studio shoot Leo called me, sounding like he'd been to hell and back. Somehow he was able to make it in to the Riptide studio, where the rest of us were ready to party. We were all drinking and getting loud while Leo was sitting with his head about to explode. If you look at all the photos it's funny to see Leo being so over the fact that he has to hang around a bunch of us drinking after his weekend bender.

"For as long as I've known Leo I've never been anywhere with him where he hasn't hooked up with a chick. I swear he never fails. I mean, shit, every year on the North Shore he has at least one chick. Big pits and lots of tits - that best describes Alex.

"Leo's a damn good friend too. The type of guy that'll come and find you at a random Hollywood bar, lift your drunk arse up and take you out of there. Love ya Leo!" - Will George.
