The Winner of the Turbo 5 Sponsorship is Here!

The Turbo 5 Sponsorship Campaign - winner

In January 2010 to celebrate the launch of the new Turbo 5 board to our range, Turbo Surf Designs put out the call to the global bodyboarding community to show us the “hottest emerging bodyboard talent in the world to become a member of the Turbo 5 team”. The prize offered was the exclusive opportunity to become a professional bodyboarder as part of the Turbo 5 team, which means global team trips with professional photographers and all the other perks that come with being part of the Turbo professional team. Riders were asked to send video clips and additional information to stake their claim.

To read more, head to the first competition news post here.

The winner is...

Sam Strachan (Australia)
It's hard to believe Sam Strachan is only 16 years of age. There's been plenty of talk coming out Cronulla (one of bodyboarding’s toughest proving grounds) about Sam Strachan for what seems like years, and at the age of 15 Sam already had a Hawaiian season under his belt. More recently Sam beat a field of the best aspiring stars in the sport to win his place in the Shark Island Challenge. Sam has a level head on his shoulders and the talent to do anything in the sport.

Turbo Surf Designs
is proud to announce Sam as the 5th member of the Turbo 5 Professional team. He will be working closely with Turbo Development Manager, Andrew Lester and travelling with the Turbo professional team to take his career to the next level. Congratulations Sam and welcome to the team!

No offence but the brazilians had no style what so ever. Sam deserved to win this, he has the best style and boosts big and is only 16. He's just starting his carrer where as one of the brazilians was 34 or something. On his way to the end of his.

Think the Brazilians have something to moan at here. IMO they were ripping. Sam is only 16 and is such a good rider but I agree it seems Turbo took the easier option and went for an Australian rider.
The fact that Turbos comp info says "The prize offered was the exclusive opportunity to become a professional bodyboarder" become a prof rider? Sam was already sponsered by Toys so does make the comp look like they were just shopping for a new contract..
Whatever the decision you will always have upset peps.

He is lucky, i know kids in hawaii that take him out and are the same age 16. watchout AUS Hawaii has just as much talent.

Quoting Dave:
Hey"count", the TURBO 5 means 5 people represent this board , not 5 finalist.
So stoked Sam won, he really is a kid to look out for in the future.

ahh Dave and everyone else who disagreed with me, I think you missed the reading exercise on Sesame Street... This is on the first page "It was an extremely difficult task to separate the Top 5 entries received. In the end other factors such as competition results and feedback from local peers was sought to separate the best of the best. It was impossible and unfair to judge on the clip alone, and each entry had a story." Top 5 entries. Not top 6. So stick that in your pipe and smoke it Biatch!

WTF Brazos why are you all acting like it was owed to you, sound like spoilt little kids!
Sam rips for sure, but I thought the point of the comp was to unearth an underground or fresh rider, not an opportunity for a spono'd rider to hunt for a better contract.

yep, they def got it right, this is the best vid, and his comp results speak for themselves. stop whining about the two brazo's, yeah that older guy tears the bag, but the other is a grommet with a rank style who really shouldn't have had a vid in the finals.

Wow a few dissapointed Brazillians, Guys watch all the videos again. I just did. Kalani doesnt have the smooth style that Sam does. Giuliano is a great rider but he is at the beck end of his career and this award is to take a rider to the next level. Sam is perfect for it. Yes he was with Toys but obviously thinks Turbo can take him further than a predominantly drop knee brand. The way I read it was Turbo 5 means a 5th member of the global team who cares how many finalists. The best rider won. Suck it up....

This is a decision based on convenience. How on earth is his riding better than the Brazilians? They pissed all over this guy.

Congratulations to the champions .... but I found unfair, five finalists were the fourth and appeared with two Brazilians, who in my opinion should be one of them, and was chosen a sixth finalist. That's like me combined.

a lot of bullshit!
disowned especially the Brazilians who broke into the waves, and they put down in very heavy waves over 8 feet, and were counted as one person only!
riptide, learn to count!
My vote goes to the Brazilian Itacoatiara!

the brazilians sessions are fucking sick! so heavy, it has a thing that I did not understand, isn't SAM already sponSo'd by tOyS?
the Brazilians and others were deserving much more the sponsorship of which this sam who was already well. therefore that the bodyboard does not go for front, and great talents are set aside! a feather!

This decision by Turbo dissapoints me slightly. Although Sam here has flawless style and some sick tricks in his arsenal I was hoping for something fresh and new from an industry leader like Turbo. How many times do we need to see the same tricks boosted on the same waves? At least if it was given to someone outside of Aus we would be seeing some new footage. GIVE US SOMETHING NEW!!!

this the true:

"TURBO GUYS, YOU DONT NEED A GOOD RIDER TO REPRESENT YOU ONLY !
YOU NEED SOMEONE THAT CAN SELL YOUR BOARDS, AFTER ALL THIS IS A CAPITALIST WORLD.
GIU S GOT IT ALL. AWESOME RIDER, PROFESSIONAL MODEL (HIS FACE HAS BEEN EVEN IN COCA-COLA DRINKING WATER BOTTLES), PLUS OTHER PUBLICITY CAMPAIGNS.
THE GUY IS A GREAT CAPOEIRA FIGHTER (BRAZILIAN-AFRICAN MARTIAL ART), ALSO A GREAT DJ AND RECENTLY, HES HEADING THE ORGANIZATION OF A BB EVENT IN FERNANDO DE NORONHA, A TROPICAL PARADISE ISLAND IN BRAZIL.
HE IS A MULTIMEDIA MAN AND AN INSANE RIDER . THATS WHAT YOU NEED IF YOU WANT TO SELL THOUSANDS OF TURBO BOARDS IN BRAZIL.
THATS IT !Arthu steel coments
