It'd seem that bodyboarding's kind of big in Chile...
Round Four Round Up
The following release can be found at the home of the Arica Challenge, chilebodyboard.com:
In spite of a few hesitations about the conditions yesterday, the competition continued this morning as “El Gringo” proved its usual consistency.
This morning the conditions were perfect to continue on with the Arican Chilean Challenge. Yesterday nothing was sure, but today the organization decided to start the first heat of the fourth round. The heat was protagonized by Michel Novy from Australia, Eriberto Abrantes from Brazil and the Chileans Kevin Torres and Gastón Rojas.
The Australian achieved a very good performance with an impressive second wave. He scored a 9.33 with an ARS (Air Rollo Spin) which made him win the first round, 6 points ahead of the Chilians. The second heat had good waves, about 5 feet high seeing two-times world champion Damian King (Australie) eliminated by Jacob Romero from Hawaii and the South African Jared Huston.
Then, it was time for 3 of the best Chilian riders to come on stage : Michel Pascal, Cristian “Popey” Fernández and Alexandre Wittman and one of the favourites of the contest: the Brazilan Luis Villar. This fascinating heat was won by the Ariqueño Cristian Fernández who received the cheers of the public for the quality of his performance. In second place Alexandre Witman from Iquique ( Chile) who achieved a very good performance too.
Today, we are done with the eight heat of the fourth round with the participation of Yeray Martínez from The Canary Islands, Jake Stone from Australia, Gestao Entrudo from Portugal, Ardiel Jimenez from The Canary Islands and Sebastián Krefft from Antofagasta (Chile).
The competition goes on tomorrow morning at 7.30AM . The fifth round will protagonize the winner of Pipeline (first Grand Slam of the year) : Amaury Lavherne ( Reunion Island-France), Magno Olivera from Brazil , Michel Novy from Australia and Jared Huston from South Africa. During the next few days, the famous “21 de mayo swell” is expected. This swell will assure an exciting final of the Arican Chilean Challenge 2010.

Here's some news that may outline the potential swell prospects for the final rounds at Arica:
The Quiksilver Ceremonial Punta de Lobos Big Wave Invitational has officially been called ON for Wednesday, May 19, after event organizers received forecasts that waves measuring 25 feet and larger will hit Punta de Lobos, Pichilemu (2000km south of Arica), tomorrow.
A one-day, big wave invitational surfing contest, the Quiksilver Ceremonial will crown the event's champion tomorrow afternoon. The winner will also become the early leader of the 2010/2011 Big Wave World Tour. The event features 24 of the world's top big wave riders and will be broadcast live at:

"These are the most perfect conditions you can expect in Punta de Lobos," said local resident, big wave expert and invitee to the event, Ramon Navarro. "We are expecting swell and winds from the perfect direction and waves of more than 25 feet.

The contest is well underway, with the third round winding up this morning as the surf decided to slow down for the first time this week.
It amazes me how much the young kids of Arica absolutely worship bodyboarding, the Aussie pack here are running on similar celeb status as a national rugby league team back at home and Riggas is even closer to something Justin Bieber might be used to at a promo appearance in middle America. I managed to squeeze through the crowd to snap a few shots of Jake and Riggas as they were cornered on their way back to the hotel.

Not long after I had a little girl of about three years of age poke me in the leg with a pen and poster asking for a signature in baby Spanish, haha.
It's great to see such a positive push in this area and in the contest's 7th year of running the younger generation of riders are looking like they could make an attack in the sport in years to come.
Tomorrow should more than likely bring the start of the next round of competition, don't be afraid to show some support for the boys on ibaworldtour.com.
