Day 5 Round Up
“El Gringo” starts to show its real strength.
There were waves up to 10 feet for the competition this morning - a good playground for the best riders of the tour.
It started at 8am this morning with the current World Champion Amaury Lavherne who won his heat easily. Magno Oliveira ( Brazil) and Michel Novy (Australia) had a close match for the second place. Michel Novy won at the last minute with spectacular maneuvers.
The fifth round went on with two Australian victories: Ben Player and Ryan Hardy. They had good size waves allowing them to show their skills in perfect barrels. They also won their heat easily.
Then, it was time for the the very excpected local Cristian “Popey” Fernández and the Brazilian Guilherme Tamega to show up. They won the heat against the Hawaiien Dave Hubbard and the Australian Tom Rigby. This heat showed the supremacy of the Chilean and the Brazilian on this wave that they both know well, the Chilean with its amazing maneuvers and the Brazilian with beautiful barrels.
Coming out of the water Tamega told us: “ I was very worried about taking good waves quickly at the beginning of the heat to be more relaxed and then let the others compete without interfering too much.” The Ariqueño came out for the second place of the heat.
The next heat was quieter than the other one but with good waves between 10 and 13 feet. Diego Cabrera from Spain and the Brazilian ex-world champion won the heat.
Followed an electric heat with world champion Jeff Hubbard (Hawaii), Dave Winchester, Dallas Singer from Australia and Ardiel Jiménez from the Canary Islands.
Jeff Hubbard gave us a wonderful show with magical aerial maneuvers, the public were stoked. Jeff came out with a perfect ten on his second wave, first one of the competition that made him won the heat. On second place, Dave Winchester achieved a very good performance too with breathtaking barrels.
Then, legendary Mike Stewart won its heat with his amazing and very personal style of endless barrels and perfect rollos. The portugese Gestao Entrudo qualified too.
The next heat was won by the Pierre Louis Costes, with the Australian Jake Stone on second place, both of them qualified for the next round ( men to men).
The day ended up with the eight heat won by Yeray Martínez(Canaries), followed by the Brazilian Eder Luciano. They scored 17.67 and 12.34 points.
It goes on tomorrow morning at 7:30 with the round of the last 16. The men to men guarantee an amazing show with Amaury Lavherne against Ryan Hardy, Ben Player and Magno Olivera, the Brazilians Guilherme Tamega and Uri Valadao, the only chilean left o the competition Cristian Fernández against the spanish Diego Cabrera. Jeff Hubbard and Gestao Entrudo, Mike Stewart and Dave Winchester, Pierre Louis Costes against Eder Luciano and at last Yeray Martínez against Jake Stone. // Courtesy chileanbodyboard.com
