With any luck next year (or possibly even this year) these guys will be joined by a few hundred of their mates and they'll all be watching an IBA Grand Slam Series event. Photo // Andy Lawrence (from Riptide #174).
Landmark moment for IBA
The IBA World Tour took a quantum leap forward today when a contract
was signed between IBA and a new company that will manage the 2011 Tour.
“We're about to enter a new era of professionalism” said IBA International General Manager Terry McKenna.“My team has taken the sport as far as we could with the limited resources we've had, but this new company (IBA Pty Ltd) will take it to a whole new level.”
IBA Pty Ltd is a group of investors lead by Turbo businessman, and avid bodyboarder, Gregg Taylor. They have a clear and concise plan for the future of the
IBA that includes:
• A new website and content manager.
• A new TV series featuring each of the Grand Slam Series (GSS) events.
• A new surfing format and two-tiered system (GSS & Global Qualifying series (GQS))
• New venues like Tahiti and Mexico, as well as El Fronton in the Canary Islands.
The Tour was officially handed to the new company yesterday and Gregg Taylor is already off on a plane today heading to Europe to sign new contracts with potential sponsors.
More information and a comprehensive YouTube clip will be released in the coming weeks explaining the new Tour.
Regards,
Terry McKenna
General Manager IBA International Inc

Mexico event would be insane if they hold it waves plus tahti and oz would be good...maybe even a east coast + west coast spot?
Hopefully pipe and chile dont drop off.
if you want the sport to go mainstream you have to do usa, australia and europe properly. there must be a good event in mainland united states and a good venue in australia. Thats where the market and the media are. iba cant go past that and pretend a dream event in island x will ever change anything.
Max, why the fuck would you want to defame a heap of guys that may have used drugs and ride lids, but once contributed more to the sport than you or any of us will ever do just because they chose a different path? Interesting perhaps, but nothing that would contribute to the growth of the sport.
My 2 cents anyway.
Well done to Gregg and thanks to Terry for all the hard work over the years, hope he continues in some way or another!
Keep Riptide clean, sensorship is a great idea!
xoxox
I hope they don't get so professional that they bring in drug testing otherwise there'll only be one or two competitors in the water at each event.
Hey Riptide, why don't you run a feature on drug-fucked has-beens? There are certainly enough of them.
Anyway, sorry to neg out, woooo, I really hope all this goes off like a rocket. Just bumming all my old mates now froth out on coke not slabs.
what about events in oz bring back box and sHARK ISLAND would b good to see cloud 9 again 2
In saying that; THIS SOUNDS EPIC! - bring on next year!
