Cracking Canarian Coverage with The Kat
What a way to finish the year of competitive bodyboarding for 2010! The final day of Confital had it all. Ups and downs, favourites and upsets, goals realised and dreams shattered. Most importantly though it provided smoking waves and the world’s best who stepped up to the plate and tore the place apart!

The final day of El Confital

There were highlights galore so check back over the coming days for more words and images from this momentous day… but for now let’s keep it simple and focus on those who eventually wore the spoils of victory.

The DK final was first up featuring newly crowned World Champ Cesar Bauer, Canarian Ardiel Jiminez and prone highlight reels Dave Winchester and Amaury Laverhne. If you thought Wing’s day yesterday was a banger, today it just got better. Posting not one, but TWO tens, for a perfect score, Wing blazed through barrel after barrel on his way to the event win, and overall second on the DK tour!

Next up were the girls, out into some of the best conditions of the day. The sets were hitting the shallow Confital end bowl just right, and the girls traded tubes and big rolls for most of the heat. It was a tight race, in the end, decided by another perfect 10, and probably one of the barrels of the contest. Japan’s Chiaki Okuyama locked deep into a giant Confi cavern eventually rocketing out on to the shoulder to the cheers of the hyped crowd. Two down, and one to go.

The mens final was a climax in the best of ways. Four consistent competitors throughout the rounds, who clearly saved their best until last. It was a flip off in the early stages, a flurry of mid range scores, with not just wave selection, but wave riding knowledge, playing a huge part as the lead see sawed back and forth. In the end it was South African Mark McCarthy ('til this event still scrapping for a place in next year’s Top 24) who threw down the gauntlet landing himself a 9 for a massive ARS. The score just seemed to spurt him on, and before you knew it he had a 9.75 to go with it for another barrel to giant ARS combo. The remainder of the heat was a pleasure to watch, but there was no catching the Saffa and as his fellow Springboks hoisted him on their shoulders up the beach, it brought a fine end to another incredible year in bodyboarding.
