Don’t know who Renan is? Well thanks to the interwebs we found out about him for you.
Can you tell us about yourself, where you grew up and how you got into bodyboarding?
When I was five I went to live in the US and lived around Florida and California for about ten years. I started bodyboarding around ten but not seriously. I moved back to Brazil and hung around people that were bodyboarding every day. All my friends were bodyboarders and I can’t live without it any more. Living in Brazil is sick, you have a lot of good parties and also hot chicks are easy to find. There’s warm water, no sharks and fun waves. Nothing too crazy though.
Do you think you’d like to get onto the world tour or free surf? Which one appeals more to you?
I’ve done one event at Peru and Chile last year. I did very well at Peru which didn’t happen at Chile. I lost my first heat, I got to Chile on my first day of my heat. I got stuck in Peru because my passport and stuff got robbed, so I barely made it to the comp. I didn’t get to know the waves that well but did some sick inverts on the rights, but didn’t land them.
I just don’t think you have to do comps to be good at what you do, in my opinion. All the freestyle riders of most sports are the best, they make it happen without a tour behind them. It’s not that I don’t like comps, it’s just that I don’t need them at the moment and it’s pretty expensive, you have to pay for the whole trip and then another $200 to compete. You have to win to barely get what you wasted on going there. Plus, you don’t get to enjoy the sport that much because everybody is in the water the whole day. If you have a sponsor that pays for you to do the whole tour and to live then great, make it happen!
Is there anything in particular you’d like to achieve in bodyboarding?
I did one of them this year, which is to live off of bodyboarding just with free surfing. I’m living with my girlfriend, my next goal is to build my own brand and help the sport grow here. We don’t have companies supporting free surfing here so that’s what I’m going to do for the future.
You seem to concentrate on getting your name out there with clips rather than doing comps, why’s that?
Because it’s fun to surf with my friends and film, my brother rips at editing the clips. I have to be out there, that’s what I’m getting paid to do so it gets pretty serious sometimes. But I just don’t need to do comps, right now I prefer to have fun the whole year.
Have you been to Australia or have plans on visiting?
No, I’ve never been there but I will for sure, it’s just a matter of time, Australia was made for bodyboarding.
Are you a bit of a celebrity at home with the blonde hair?
No I don’t really think so, I just like to think I’m lucky I guess. I’m not using blonde hair any more, just trying to do something different, my hair is silver now like an old man.
