Davis Blackwell (WA) held off a determined Jake Stone (QLD) to clinch his first ever Australian Pro Tour event at the Pride Mystics Pro presented by Inverted over the weekend (Saturday, July 5). “I’m so happy,” said Davis. “This is my first win on the Aussie tour and to beat opposition like this makes it even sweeter” he added. Third place went to Dallas Singer (NSW) with Jason Finlay (NSW) fourth.

The race for the inaugural ABA Pro Tour Championship was reduced to four riders leading into the event, but hot favorite Lachie Cramsie (QLD) tumbled out in his opening round, leaving the gate open for Joe Clarke (QLD) Marshall Watson (SA) and Jake Stone (QLD). Joe Clarke looked set to capture his first championship, but finished third in his quarterfinal heat behind Chase O’Leary and Jason Finlay. “That was just so heavy,” said Joe. “I just couldn’t deal with the pressure of that out there today. I’ve never experienced anything like it”.

In quarterfinal 3 the final two outsiders were pitted against each other, with Stone securing a second to move into the semis and keep his dreams alive. A nervous Joe Clarke had to sit and watch the remaining heats to see if Stone could finish first or second to capture the championship for 2014. In semifinal 2 Joe looked certain to secure the title with less then 10 seconds remaining when Stone paddled into a tiny double up and got the score he needed to make the final. Jake pumped his fist in the air and jumped for joy when the score was announced and ran up the beach like a man possessed.

Jake has been following the Australian Pro Bodyboard Tour for years and finished second in 2009 behind Corey McClean (QLD) so he wasn’t about to let this opportunity slip away. Remember that Jake needed to finish first or second in the final to win the title, but he was up against some serious opposition.

Davis Blackwell seemed to have a good read on the sandbanks at Mystics and picked the eyes out of the best sets in the final. The four-man priority system meant everyone had the best possible opportunity to get their fair share of waves, but Davis choreographed his rides perfectly to take the title. Dallas and Jake went wave for wave but when the siren sounded Jake was in second and that was enough to secure his maiden ABA Pro Tour title.

“I’m just so stoked, I cant stop smiling,” laughed Jake. “Thanks to ABA and all the crew that have made this tour what it is and I can’t wait to see what you guys roll out in 2015,” he added. So Jake Stone (Qld) is the 2014 ABA Pro Tour presented by REBEL Champion.

ABA General manager Ben Oborne summed it up well at the official presentation. “This is just the beginning guys, we want to make this the best domestic tour in the world and we will have all the dates announced on November 1st for the 2015 ABA Tour”.
